Dutch court invalidates marriage contracted through artificial intelligence

Khaberni  - A Dutch court ruled the invalidation of a marriage after its contract was written with the assistance of the artificial intelligence software "ChatGPT" (ChatGPT).

The couple believed they had celebrated their love with a marriage in a ceremony held in April 2025 in Zwolle, northern Netherlands. Seeking an informal civil marriage, they asked a friend to conduct the ceremony, who turned to the "ChatGPT" software for help in drafting the marriage contract.

However, the Zwolle court ruled on Tuesday that the couple did not comply with the proper procedures required for marriage contracts in the Netherlands, stating that the law requires couples to declare that they will fulfill all legal obligations associated with marriage.

It added that the contract drawn up by artificial intelligence "shows that the man and woman did not provide the declaration referred to in Article 1:67, paragraph 1, of the Dutch Civil Code."

During the wedding ceremony, according to the contract rejected by the court, the man was asked, "Do you promise to stand by (name of the woman) today, tomorrow, and forever?" and "to laugh together, grow together, and share love no matter what happens?" They were also asked if each would "continue to support and stick with the other, even in difficult times?"

After answering these questions, the contract stated that they "are not just husband and wife but, above all, one team, a crazy pair in love with each other."

Because of the text included in the "artificial intelligence contract," the court ruled that the marriage of the man and woman was not officially documented, which "means that the marriage certificate was erroneously recorded in the civil registry."

The couple said they did not intend to make this mistake, and that the civil officer at the wedding ceremony did not alert them at the time. They added that changing their marriage date would severely emotionally impact them and requested that their original wedding date be considered their legal marriage date.

However, the court did not agree with this and stated, "It understands the importance of the marriage date listed on the marriage certificate to the man and woman, but it cannot ignore the law."
