Khaberni - The Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities have commenced temporary protection and reinforcement works for the historic pond wall in Al-Karak, which has partially collapsed due to the heavy rains experienced by the province during the recent storm that affected the kingdom at the end of last December.
These works are part of an emergency response to the risks arising from the collapse, aiming to prevent further damage to other parts of the wall, ensuring the safety of citizens and pedestrians, while also preserving the historical and archaeological value of the site.
According to the executing agencies, the works include reinforcing the wall using modern and quick-to-implement systems that rely on creating a weighted block composed of concrete blocks. These serve as a temporary support to the wall to stabilize it and prevent further collapses.
The adoption of this temporary solution was based on engineering consultations from a number of companies and specialized engineering offices, following field visits to the site and evaluation of the structural condition of the wall, which recommended adopting this type of support as a safe and effective option at this stage.
The relevant authorities explained that the concrete blocks used in the reinforcement works are reusable, allowing for their dismantling or re-use later when transitioning to permanent solutions, without causing additional damage to the site or its archaeological elements, and in alignment with the standards of preserving historical heritage.
They confirmed that these preventive measures aim to stabilize the wall and protect the archaeological site to ensure public safety, until the completion of necessary technical and engineering studies, and the implementation of permanent solutions to comprehensively address the causes of damage.
The teams from both ministries continue to work in the field at an accelerated pace, and in coordination with the relevant authorities, to ensure the completion of the temporary reinforcement works as soon as possible and to reduce potential risks, while continuing to monitor the site in anticipation of any urgent developments.
