Khaberni - A recent report by the Global Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) upgraded Zain Group in the global ranking for corporate and institutional disclosure operations regarding climate action to level A.
Zain clarified that it has strengthened its leadership in the ranking, placing it among the top telecommunications companies globally, and has enhanced its leadership in climate change efforts in the Middle East and Africa markets.
Zain, the leader in technological innovations in the Middle East and Africa markets, noted that the advance in the global ranking index (CDP) highlights the strength and diversity of its initiatives in implementing best practices in disclosing the environmental impacts of its operations, and reaffirms its commitment to taking decisive actions, adopting initiatives, and making systematic changes in the early carbon disclosure project.
The group confirmed that it has adopted a transparent methodological framework for reporting climate change management, where it continuously conducts comprehensive audits of its carbon footprint, indicating its commitment to reconfirming emission targets aligned with the guidelines of the "Science-Based Targets Initiative" (SBTi), aiming to cut carbon emissions by half by 2030, and achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
It is worth noting that the Carbon Disclosure Project CDP collaborates with a large number of entities and institutions in various fields such as: the Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), the Climate Disclosure Standards Board (CDSB), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Corporate Transparency Alliance (ACT), the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), and the United Nations Initiative on Climate Change (UNCC).
The Global Carbon Disclosure project ranks companies based on transparent results covering: comprehensive disclosure of environmental impacts, risks and opportunities, governance and actions, awareness of environmental risks and how they relate to business, demonstrating management of these environmental risks, and proving best practices associated with environmental leadership. The nonprofit CDP organization has regional offices in dozens of countries where there are now companies, cities, and regions that are disclosing, also recognized by prominent global indices, such as the MSCI Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) index, which reflects the evolving needs of investors who aim to increasingly integrate ESG indicators into asset allocation and valuations, and the organization manages the global disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, and regions to manage their environmental impacts.
The global rating index shows that the average level in the telecommunications sector and data centers is B, while the global average is C, making Zain the only company in Kuwait to achieve an A-level in the leadership category, and among 21 companies that disclosed in Kuwait and 252 global telecommunications companies, noting that only 30 telecommunications companies have achieved this level of scores, placing Zain among the global elite in the telecommunications sector.
Bader Nasser Al-Kharafi, Vice Chairman and CEO of Zain Group said, "Zain believes that joint efforts to achieve sustainable growth and lead climate change efforts should move together."
Al-Kharafi added, "The group continues its efforts in expanding its digital infrastructure to provide meaningful connectivity, and at the same level intensifies its initiatives to accelerate its climate change efforts and reduce emissions across its operations in the region's markets to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050."
Jennifer Suleiman, Chief Sustainability Officer at Zain Group and Mohamed El-Marashdy, Chief Technology Officer, commented on this achievement saying, "Zain's superiority on the global ranking demonstrates its increasing commitment to disclosure measures and transparency integrated into climate governance, this upgrade will make us more committed to the goals adopted from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), and the continuous focus on achieving measurable reductions, enhancing resilience, and long-term value."
Zain Group operates in diverse markets, facing increasing climate challenges such as rising temperatures, water scarcity, flooding, and shifts in energy infrastructure, prompting it to prioritize climate resilience and decarbonization to protect the performance of its networks and business continuity, and to proactively address its environmental impacts.
