Deputy Abbas discusses with a former UN envoy ways to implement the second phase of the Gaza agreement

Khaberni - Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh met on Friday with former UN envoy to the Middle East Nikolai Mladenov, who is nominated for the position of coordinator of the "Peace Council" announced in the American plan for ending the war in Gaza.

The two met in the city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, following talks Mladenov had with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his meeting with President Isaac Herzog.

Bulgarian diplomat Mladenov served as the UN envoy for the Middle East peace process from early 2015 until the end of 2020.

Media reports suggest that he is nominated to hold the position of international coordinator for the "Peace Council" in Gaza, a transitional authority supposed to oversee the management of the sector and chaired by the US President Donald Trump.

Al-Sheikh stated in a statement on his X platform account that during his meeting with Mladenov "an extensive discussion of the overall political and field developments in the Palestinian territories took place, focusing on the situation in the Gaza Strip, ways to transition to the second phase (of the ceasefire), and mechanisms for implementing the plan of US President Donald Trump, and United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 2803".

He added that the meeting also addressed "the current situations in the West Bank, including the escalation of assaults and violence by settlers against Palestinians and their property".

The Security Council had ratified Trump's plan last November. According to the 20-item plan, Gaza will be managed through a temporary transitional committee of non-partisan technocrats, under the supervision and follow-up of the "Peace Council".

The ceasefire agreement ended two years of war on the Gaza Strip, but officials in the White House see a slowdown on both sides in starting the second phase of the agreement.

Under the second phase, Israel is supposed to gradually withdraw from its positions in Gaza, while Hamas must lay down its arms, and a international force ensures a state of stability in the devastated sector.
