SmartThings from Samsung First Platform to Support Matter Cameras

Khaberni  -  Samsung Electronics announced that its SmartThings smart home platform now supports the Matter 1.5 standard, which is the global standard for smart homes, making it the first in the smart home sector to allow support for Matter-compatible cameras.

Starting later this month, Samsung will begin rolling out new updates for the SmartThings platform aimed at expanding the list of devices that support the Matter standard, which currently includes lighting, door locks, switches, and a variety of sensors, through the addition of camera support. With this update, SmartThings becomes the widest supporting smart home platform for Matter devices in the sector.

Commenting on this, the Executive Vice President and head of SmartThings team at Samsung Electronics, Jaeyeon Jung said, "Samsung aims to ensure that products and services built on different brands and protocols provide a unified experience through the SmartThings platform. We will continue to expand our support for the industry-adopted standards, including the Matter standard, alongside enhancing collaboration further to push new user experiences".

Enhancing security and safety levels with camera support within ‘Matter 1.5’

Matter 1.5, announced by (CSA) in November, adds support for cameras along with advanced improvements for control mechanisms of closing elements, including curtains, shades, and garage doors, as well as developing energy management capabilities.

The smart home sector gives special importance to including a standardized camera standard, given their fundamental role in any comprehensive smart home system. Matter 1.5 supports a wide range of camera uses, including indoor and outdoor surveillance cameras, video doorbells, and more. It also provides advanced features such as live video streaming, two-way communication, motion detection, event logging, and controls for camera movement and zoom.

Broader choices for users and a smoother experience for developers

With the adoption of the Matter standard by the SmartThings platform, camera manufacturers can now launch Matter-compatible cameras that integrate seamlessly with SmartThings, without the need to develop or customize separate application programming interfaces.

In this context, Samsung has collaborated with a selection of global companies specialized in internet of things devices, including 'Aqara', 'Eve', and 'Ulticam', to develop cameras that support the Matter standard, with the launch of these products starting gradually from March 2026.

SmartThings has already established partnerships with several leading brands such as 'Aqara', 'Arlo', 'Hue', 'Ring', and others, to offer a wide range of smart home camera experiences across multiple protocols and connectivity methods. With this update, user options expand further, as Matter cameras can now be easily integrated into the SmartThings ecosystem.

Connecting cameras with SmartThings enables users to build a secure and comfortable smart home that aligns with their lifestyle, by providing essential functions such as remote home monitoring, pet reassurance, and creating customized routines through integration with smart doorbells and other connected devices.

Enhancing industry leadership through broader support for Matter devices

The Samsung SmartThings platform continues to expand its global partnership network as part of its open platform strategy. Through the Works With SmartThings (WWST) certification program, the platform now supports more than 4,700 models of devices, in collaboration with over 390 partner brands worldwide. With the acceleration in adopting the Matter standard, Samsung has introduced 58 different categories of Matter devices into daily use by users, enhancing SmartThings' position as a leading platform that provides the highest levels of compatibility and integration within the smart home ecosystem.
