Deputy appreciates the Jordanian governments direction to replace plastic bags with cloth bags

Khaberni - The head of the Parliamentary Environment and Climate Committee, Deputy Jihad Abboy, confirmed that the government's move towards replacing plastic bags with cloth bags is an important procedural step in enhancing national environmental policies and reducing pollution from single-use plastic bags.

Abboy noted that this approach aligns with national efforts aimed at protecting the environment and preserving natural resources, amidst the negative effects plastic bags have on soil, water, wildlife, and public health, pointing out that the cloth alternatives represent a practical and sustainable option that contributes to waste reduction and promotes a culture of responsible consumption.

He explained that this step came following the approval of the executive program for the waste management and random dumping reduction strategy for the years 20262027, which was launched as a continuation of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II’s initiative, aimed at addressing environmental challenges associated with waste management and promoting positive environmental behavior among citizens, indicating that replacing plastic bags is one of the most prominent practical applications of this strategy on the ground.

He emphasized the importance of accompanying this direction with national awareness programs, effective partnerships with the private sector and civil society institutions, alongside supporting local industries producing environmentally friendly alternatives, contributing to achieving a positive economic impact.

Abboy concluded by reaffirming that the Environment and Climate Committee will continue to support national efforts and relevant legislation to protect the environment, indicating that the success of this step requires collaborative efforts between the government, citizens, and various sectors to establish responsible environmental behaviors and achieve sustainable development.
