Khaberni - Dubai Municipality has begun expanding the use of the smart waste management system, by integrating artificial intelligence technologies into monitoring and inspection operations, to enhance the level of public cleanliness across the emirate.
The waste management system in Dubai includes a comprehensive digital platform called "Clean City Index", aiming to document all stages of field monitoring and inspection, and enhance the accuracy of follow-up and decision-making efficiency.
Tracking the waste cycle
The system is linked to "RFID Reader" technology installed on waste transport vehicles, which enables tracking the waste cycle from its generation to its final destination.
It also provides an interactive geographic map (G.I.S) that displays the locations and quantities of waste according to classification and regions.
The system includes two specialized platforms, the first for registering and operating data of accredited waste transport companies, and the second for registering waste producers and documenting their collection and transport programs.
Technological and digital systems to enhance cleanliness
As part of enhancing the quality of monitoring, Dubai Municipality has started the pilot phase of the smart cameras system on a number of waste collection and transport vehicles, to monitor the level of cleanliness on roads and residential areas, and identify locations of random waste near containers and on sidewalks and squares.
The system allows instant analysis of images and data via interactive digital screens, which supports taking quick field actions and improving cleanliness levels in targeted areas.
The system also monitors violations related to waste disposal in public places, which can incur fines up to 500 dirhams, in addition to improperly disposing of large furniture and waste materials, plus all behaviors that impact the civil appearance and lead to waste accumulation.
