First JordanianEuropean Summit Launches Today in Amman

Khaberni - Jordan and the European Union are holding, in Amman on Thursday, their first-ever bilateral summit, with the participation of King Abdullah II, President of the European Council Antonio Costa, and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, in what is described as a "very important" step in the course of relations between the two sides.

The summit is held within the framework of a comprehensive strategic partnership between the European Union and Jordan, signed in January 2025, which will cover discussions on mechanisms to strengthen political and economic cooperation between the two parties, as well as the leaders will explore the latest developments on regional and international levels.

The strategic partnership covers five main axes: political relations and regional cooperation, security and defense, economic resilience, trade and investment, human capital, and migration, protection, and refugee support.

The partnership is based on a financial and investment package for the period 2025–2027 valued at about 3 billion euros, including 640 million euros in grants, 1 billion euros in concessional loans (overall financial aid), in addition to approximately 1.4 billion euros in additional investments.

The partnership also focuses on supporting the stability of Jordan in the face of exceptional geopolitical challenges, promoting political, economic, and administrative modernization, and enhancing economic resilience.

The comprehensive and strategic partnership is based on a longstanding relationship founded on a partnership agreement since 2002 and the priorities of the Jordanian-European partnership (2021–2027). The latest meeting of the partnership council between the European Union and Jordan was held on 15 July 2024. The king also met with Costa in Brussels to discuss the relations on 29 January 2025, then again on 21 September 2025 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York.

The meeting between His Majesty King Abdullah II and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, on 7 December, focused on ways to strengthen cooperation between Jordan and the European Union, based on the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between them, where the importance of building on the available economic opportunities was emphasized, especially through the Jordanian-European summit to be hosted by Amman, in addition to the joint economic forum planned to be held in 2026 with the participation of investors from both sides.

The meeting also addressed the regional developments and the necessity to reach a comprehensive calm in the region and to maintain state sovereignty, with emphasis that the two-state solution is the only way to achieve a fair and comprehensive peace.
