Iraqi Doctor Dies by Burning at the Hands of Her Husband

Khaberni - The Iraqi doctor Israa Al-Ta'an perished after a bitter struggle with serious health complications caused by severe burns, following a brutal attack by her doctor husband in the Ninawa Governorate in northern Iraq.

Iraqi medical and security sources said that Al-Ta'an passed away after her health rapidly deteriorated, due to blood poisoning and multiple organ and respiratory failure, after undergoing treatment in several Iraqi hospitals.

The doctor was subjected in mid-December to a violent attack by her husband, who poured gasoline on her and set her on fire inside her car in the left side of Mosul city, following family disputes. The fire resulted in severe burns of 40% on her face and hands.

The Ninewa Police Command confirmed that the perpetrator had broken the car window before setting his wife's body on fire, and security forces were able to arrest him hours after the crime, through monitoring his movements with surveillance cameras in the Sarjkhana area.

On his part, the head of the Ninewa Doctors Syndicate, Dr. Mohammad Al-Hawari, said that the death of the doctor was a major shock to both the medical community and society, affirming that the syndicate is following all legal procedures to ensure the perpetrator is held accountable.

The Iraqi authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident, amidst community demands for increased protection for women and immediate accountability for offenders, after the incident sparked a widespread wave of anger on social media.
