After the UAE Ban Decision What are the Alternatives to Daily Plastic Products

Khaberni -  The UAE continues to implement its environmental policies aimed at reducing pollution and enhancing sustainability, with the initiation of the final and second phase of Ministerial Decision number (380) for the year 2022, starting from January (January) 2026, which includes a ban on importing, producing, or trading a new set of consumer plastic products and single-use bags.

This measure is part of a comprehensive legislative system launched by the country over the past years, aimed at protecting marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and reducing the environmental impact of waste, in line with the UAE's direction towards reinforcing sustainability and life quality.

List of Banned Products

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment explained that the ban, which will take effect in early 2026, includes daily products that are highly circulated, such as beverage cups and their lids, plastic tableware like spoons, forks, knives, and chopsticks, as well as plates, straws, stirrers, and food containers and boxes made of Styrofoam (foam).

The decision also includes a comprehensive ban on single-use bags, regardless of their manufacturing material, including paper bags if their thickness is less than 50 microns, effective from the same date.

Sustainable Alternatives

In lieu of the ban, the ministry has called for an expansion in the use of sustainable alternatives, which include paper cups lined with plant-based layers or natural wax, and cups made from plant materials like sugar cane or natural fibers, besides reusable cups made from stainless steel or glass or silicone.

Also included are alternatives such as paper plates or those made from plant materials, and tableware made from wood or bamboo or plant materials, in addition to lightweight metal utensils suitable for reuse, promoting a culture of repeated use rather than single-use consumption.

Specific Exemptions

Keen to support the industrial sector and ensure smooth commercial flow, the ministry noted that there are specific exemptions from the ban, including products intended for export or re-export outside the state, provided they are clearly labeled as such and prevented from being traded in the local markets.

Also exempted are bags and products made from materials recycled within the state, to encourage the local recycling industry, in addition to medication bags, trash bags, and very thin wrap rolls used for preserving fresh foods like meats, vegetables, and bread, as well as large shopping bags designated for fashion, electronic gadgets, and toys.
