Khaberni - The cigarette and tobacco market in Jordan is experiencing a shortage and monopolistic practices, amid rumors of an upcoming price increase by the government, according to claims by several traders.
Traders and cigarette distributors confirmed to Khaberni that the increase is not from the companies but from the government.
Retail traders noted that sales by wholesalers have become very limited, to hide merchandise and sell it when prices rise to ensure significant profit.
On January 8, 2025, most tobacco companies raised the prices of cigarette packs by 10 piastres per 20-cigarette pack, and retail points were notified of the new prices that began to be implemented on consumers.
It is expected that if the decision takes effect, it will fuel the market for smuggled cigarettes, as happened in the market for electronic cigarettes and tobacco heating products, with rates reaching 70%, after a decline in government revenues from these products.
