Khaberni - In its commitment to enhancing presence in specialized scientific events and affirming its role in supporting health and safety issues and human and environmental protection, keeping in pace with scientific and professional developments in the fields of dealing with hazardous chemicals, Engineer Aisha Al-Jarrah from the College of Pharmacy participated in the scientific day organized by the Jordan Engineers Association titled: "Safe Management of Hazardous Chemicals and the Role of the Data Sheet in Prevention and Protection".
Engineer Al-Jarrah explained that the scientific day discussed several specialized topics including: key issues in the field of safe management of hazardous chemicals, within the framework of enhancing awareness of chemical safety culture and adherence to approved professional standards. It focused on the scientific, applicative, and legislative aspects related to this field, involving experts and specialists. The program included a section on the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemicals, highlighting their essential role in identifying chemical hazards and safe handling methods, outlining preventive measures and first aid procedures contributing to the reduction of chemical accidents in various work environments. Also, the scientific day covered the foundations of safety in handling hazardous chemicals and related industrial processes, with an emphasis on correct practices during storage, transport, and use, the importance of providing personal protective equipment, and continuous training for workers to ensure a safe working environment. The legislative aspect discussed the regulatory and legal frameworks for managing hazardous chemical materials and wastes, shedding light on the role of regulatory bodies in monitoring compliance with approved legislations, and inspection mechanisms aimed at reducing risks and protecting public health and the environment. It also addressed occupational health and safety requirements during the handling and use of hazardous chemicals, with an emphasis on the importance of health risk assessment and periodic examinations for workers, and implementing emergency response systems in cases of exposure or chemical leakage.
The scientific day concluded with a discussion on the best practices in managing industrial hazardous wastes, where modern methods of safe treatment and disposal were reviewed, their role in reducing the negative effects on humans and the work environment, and supporting the principles of environmental sustainability. The speakers at the end of the scientific day emphasized the importance of integrating academic knowledge with practical application, and the necessity of promoting chemical safety culture in various institutions to protect workers, preserve the environment, and achieve sustainable development.
In turn, Professor Dr. Rana Abu Haweij, Dean of the College of Pharmacy at Arab Amman University, confirmed that the participation of its staff in scientific days and specialized events aligns with the vision of Arab Amman University in supporting academic excellence and enhancing the integration between the theoretical and practical aspects. She also pointed out that these participations contribute to developing scientific competencies, keeping up with the latest developments in the fields of health and safety and hazardous chemicals management, positively reflecting on the educational process and enhancing the university’s role in serving the community and achieving a safe and sustainable work environment.
