Khaberni - Three informed individuals reported that the administration of American President Donald Trump has placed the Venezuelan Interior Minister at the top of its target list, unless he aids interim President Delcy Rodriguez in meeting the United States' demands and maintaining order after the overthrow of Nicolas Maduro.
One source familiar with the American administration's thinking stated that Diosdado Cabello, who controls the security forces accused of widespread human rights violations, is one of the few Maduro loyalists whom Trump has decided to rely on as interim leaders to maintain stability during the transition period.
A source, who requested anonymity, reported that the officials are very concerned that Cabello could hinder their efforts due to his repressive record and history of competition with Rodriguez, and they seek to force his cooperation, while simultaneously looking for ways to remove him from power and ultimately exile him.
Warning for Cabello
The source stated that officials have informed Cabello through intermediaries that if he disobeys, he could face a fate similar to Maduro’s, or his life might be at risk. Maduro was arrested in an American raid last Saturday and was immediately transferred to New York for trial on charges of "drug-related terrorism".
However, eliminating Cabello could be risky, as it may prompt pro-government motorcycle groups, known as "collectivos," to take to the streets, leading to the chaos that Washington seeks to avoid. The reaction of these semi-military armed groups may depend on their sense of protection by other officials.
Two sources mentioned that the officials listed on the potential target list, including Minister of Defense Vladimir Padrino, who faces, like Cabello, American accusations of drug trafficking, and a multi-million dollar reward has been offered for information leading to his arrest.
An official from the US Department of Justice, on condition of anonymity, said: "This is still a law enforcement process, and we have not finished it yet".
The officials believe cooperation from Padrino is essential to avoid a power vacuum, given his leadership of the armed forces. A source familiar with the American administration's thinking reported that the officials believe he is less radical than Cabello and more inclined to comply with American policy, while also seeking to ensure his safe exit.
A senior official in the Trump administration declined to comment on this matter, but stated "The president talks about exerting maximum pressure on remaining elements in Venezuela, ensuring their cooperation with the United States by stopping illegal immigration, the flow of drugs, upgrading oil infrastructure, and doing what is in the best interest of the Venezuelan people".
