UNRWA decides to dismiss hundreds of its employees in Gaza working abroad

Khaberni - The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has decided to terminate the contracts of employees outside Gaza who were put on exceptional leave for the benefit of the agency.
The decision affects approximately 600 workers in the education sector, most of whom are in Egypt.
UNRWA had placed them on exceptional leave at the beginning of 2025 for a period of up to 12 months from 01/03/2025 to 28/02/2026 according to the agency’s regional staff regulations.
UNRWA stated in its announcement that it continued to exert all possible efforts to secure the necessary funds to support existing programs and meet obligations related to employees' salaries, but it has been unable to do so
It confirmed that the decision serves as an official notice that the employees' work with UNRWA will end immediately.
It added: "Your entitlements and final settlement:
* You will receive termination compensations according to staff regulation 109.9 in addition to compensation in lieu of notice and any other applicable benefits.
* A detailed analysis of your final settlement will be provided according to the regional staff rules separately".

UNRWA has advised employees to complete the clearance procedures by January 17, 2026, to enable the completion of procedures and to make every possible effort to process the due payments by January 31, 2026.
