Khaberni - On Tuesday, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Al-Kharabsheh sponsored the signing of the agreement for the sale and supply of natural gas produced from the Risha gas field to the electric system in the Kingdom between (the National Petroleum Company, the Jordanian Logistic Petroleum Facilities Company, the National Electric Power Company, the Jordanian Liquefied Gas Company, the Samra Electric Power Generating Company, and the Advanced National Company for Natural Gas).
Al-Kharabsheh confirmed that the agreement between the signatory parties reflects the level of cooperation existing in the energy sector for the purpose of expanding the base of using natural gas and consolidating reliance on this local source, in addition to securing sustainable financial funding for the operations of the National Petroleum Company.
The agreement, the first of its kind in Jordan, aims to regulate the process of purchasing gas from the National Petroleum Company to the Jordanian Logistic Petroleum Facilities Company, including its processing and transportation services to the Samra Company's sites through the Jordanian Liquefied Gas Company, for utilization in the National Electric Power Company.
According to the agreement, the Jordanian Logistic Petroleum Facilities Company will purchase natural gas from the National Petroleum Company in accordance with the needs and operational conditions of the Jordanian electric system, as defined by the National Electric Power Company. The agreed quantity in the first stage is about 2.5 million cubic feet per day, which is set to increase gradually according to a clear and binding timeline agreed upon by all signatory parties, reaching 20 million cubic feet per day.
The agreement contributes to achieving the objectives of the national strategy for the energy sector in terms of increasing the contribution of local energy sources to the total energy mix, and aims to market the gas from the National Petroleum Company, as it constitutes a revenue source enabling the company to execute its plans for drilling wells and increasing production from the Risha gas field, where natural gas is lower in cost than traditional energy sources and its use contributes more significantly to environmental preservation.
The cabinet had approved on October 22 of the previous year the agreement for the supply of natural gas produced from the Risha gas field to the electric system in the Kingdom.
