Khaberni - In an unusual humanitarian story that shook social media in China, a man struggling to save his cancer-stricken wife received an extraordinary donation from an unknown person, not money nor a bank check, but 50 tons of potatoes.
Jia Changlong (35 years old), a father of an eight-year-old child, found himself facing a treatment bill that could reach up to two million yuan ($285,000 US dollars) for treating his wife Li, who was diagnosed last July with acute myeloid leukemia., according to the "South China" newspaper.
A last attempt
After exhausting his savings, borrowing from relatives and friends, and selling everything sellable, he had no choice but to make a final attempt "to work with his hands".
Jia shared his story on social media, which gained widespread sympathy, until he received an unexpected message while traveling by train to consult his wife’s doctor.
The caller was a man named Fang (50 years old), a sweet potato farmer, who offered him an unprecedented donation, selling a whole crop weighing 50 tons and using the proceeds for the treatment.
Fang told Jia: "Sell it and help your wife.. I will send it to you in batches, just provide a place to store it".
The first batch
Due to the lack of sufficient storage, it was decided to send the potatoes in stages, where the first batch, weighing about a thousand kilograms, reached Jinan city in Shandong province, where Jia set up a small stall at the entrance of a morning market, and hung a sign that read: "Charity sale in gratitude", explaining the story of his wife's illness.
In just one day, Jia managed to sell the first batch, making 5000 yuan, while a second shipment weighing two tons was on its way to him.
A beam of light
Between tears of gratitude, Jia said: "This kind man was a beam of light in the darkest moments of my life. I don't know how to thank him, as well as everyone who bought the potatoes or stopped to ask about us".
The story not only touched hearts but also sparked a wide discussion about the meaning of smart giving, and one of the followers commented: "This donation achieved three purposes at once: supporting farmers, helping the needy without wasting dignity, and giving ordinary people a simple way to participate in charity, what an exceptional human being".
