Khaberni - Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro entered the federal courtroom in Manhattan, New York today, Monday, to begin the official procedures in the case accusing him of drug smuggling and drug-related terrorism, just two days after his arrest in a surprise US military operation in Caracas.
According to NBC, Maduro entered the courtroom wearing a prison uniform, and the case was officially called to start the session.
Reuters reported that Maduro pleaded not guilty before the court, saying he was "not guilty" of the charges against him, which include conspiracy to import cocaine and supporting drug-linked terrorist organizations.
Associated Press also mentioned that Maduro enlisted the services of prominent lawyer Barry J. Pollack, known for his success in previously securing the release of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
In a dramatic moment inside the courtroom, NBC quoted Maduro saying to the judge: "I am the president of Venezuela and I was arrested from my home in Caracas."
Associated Press confirmed Maduro's statements that he is "innocent and not guilty of anything mentioned in court."
