Spain Death of a German tourist after a coma lasting more than a year following a brutal assault by teenagers

Khaberni - A German man who had been in a coma for more than a year after being assaulted by two teenagers on the Spanish island of Mallorca has died.

The lawyer representing the German citizen said today, Sunday, that his client died yesterday, Saturday, in a hospital on the island.

Mallorca Zeitung, a German-language newspaper, reported quoting the victim's partner that the parents of the German citizen decided to withdraw the life-sustaining treatment.

The German expatriate, who worked as a project manager in a call center on the island, was assaulted on November 30, 2024, while walking home after a Christmas party in the island's capital, Palma.

According to investigators, the two teenagers who carried out the assault punched and kicked the man, who was then 58 years old, including while he lay motionless on the ground, but the motive behind the assault has not yet been fully clarified.

Investigators believe the teenagers may have carried out the assault to impress two girls who witnessed the incident, and they are now under a witness protection program.

The police arrested the suspects about a month after the assault, one of whom had fled to the mainland of Spain, and both are detained in separate juvenile detention facilities.

The trial is scheduled to begin in February, and the prosecution has charged the suspects with intentional murder.
