267000 unlicensed vehicles in Jordan last year

Khaberni - Member of Parliament Ha'il Ayash stated that the House of Representatives adopted a parliamentary memorandum urging the government to adopt a flexible mechanism for licensing vehicles, after the increase in the number of vehicles whose licenses had expired.

Ayash added in statements to the "Al-Mamlaka" TV that the number of vehicles with expired licenses reached 267,000 last year, which has negative effects on public safety in the streets.

He noted that the memorandum calls for facilitating procedures for the vehicle licensing mechanism, which includes dividing the license fee into several payments to ease the burden on citizens.

Ayash confirmed that the memorandum was proposed due to economic conditions and the significant financial amounts borne by those who commit offenses, which leads some to avoid renewing their vehicle licenses.

He explained that the proposed mechanism has several positives if adopted by the government, such as increasing revenue and reducing the number of offending vehicles on the roads.

Meanwhile, the president of the Jordanian Association for Road Safety, Wafai Meses, on Sunday questioned the reasons for not renewing vehicle licenses, asking whether this was due to the accumulation of fines and penalties, or because some vehicles are not fit to drive on the roads.

Meses said that the association strives to protect citizens from traffic accidents and their consequences, including deaths and injuries.

He added that the repetition of offenses and fines leads some drivers not to license their vehicles, emphasizing that the law was established to reduce offenses, and that penalties are imposed only on offenders.

Meses pointed out that there are incentives for drivers who do not commit offenses, by reducing the cost of mandatory insurance upon licensing.

He highlighted that 543 people died in road accidents, considering these numbers to be "enormous" and stating that traffic offenses are essentially accident projects.

Meses urged citizens to comply with the laws and not commit offenses, so that values of fines and penalties do not accumulate on them.

He stressed that traffic offenses fundamentally stem from the driver's behavior, who must adhere to traffic rules to avoid receiving driving offenses.
