Khaberni - A recent report reveals five popular foods among children that medical experts advise against consuming due to their high sugar content and harmful additives, which may pose a danger to children's health when consumed regularly.
According to the "New York Times", these foods include:
1. Slush drinks
Sweet drinks made of ice, syrup, and glycerol, a sugar substitute that prevents freezing, were studied by researchers at "College Dublin" in 21 children between the ages of two and seven who needed emergency treatment after drinking slush, showing symptoms such as low blood sugar and even seizures.
Doctors warn that glycerol may impair glucose metabolism in young children, and experts recommend replacing them with homemade smoothie juices made from fresh fruits, which provide natural sweetness as well as fibers and vitamins.
2. Cereal bars
Despite being marketed as a healthy choice, most cereal bars contain high levels of sugar, refined grains, and unhealthy fats, for instance, the Nature Valley Oats and Honey bar contains 11.3 grams of sugar, about 13% of the daily intake recommended for children.
Nutrition experts suggest replacing them with whole grains or oatmeal, which provide sustainable energy and fiber without the excess sugar.
3. Gummy sweets
Gummy sweets consist almost entirely of sugar, leading to a sudden rise in blood sugar levels, rapid energy crashes, and increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and tooth decay.
It is recommended to replace them with fresh or dried fruits, which are rich in natural sugars, vitamins, and fibers that help regulate energy.
4. Flavored yogurt
Despite being low in fat, most flavored yogurts contain high sugar levels, contributing to obesity and tooth decay.
Plain Greek yogurt with fresh fruits is considered a healthy option that provides protein, probiotics, and sustainable energy.
5. Marshmallows
Marshmallows contain almost 100% sugar, with no nutritional value, contributing to tooth decay.
Healthy alternatives such as fruit skewers or homemade frozen yogurt provide natural sweetness along with beneficial nutrients and fibers.
In conclusion, nutrition experts affirm that replacing these foods with natural options helps children maintain better health, support growth, and reduce risks associated with sugar and processed substances.
