Khaberni - A Turkish court in Manisa province issued its final verdict in one of the cases that sparked widespread outrage in the country, after a video documenting a young man's assault on his minor sister and pouring boiling water on her went viral, in an incident described as shocking to the public opinion.
The widely circulated video featured a 19-year-old young man pouring boiling water on his 16-year-old sister and forcing her to kiss his feet, threatening her and exercising physical and psychological violence against her.
The video caused a huge stir recently, especially since the young man filmed the video and shared it on social media.
During the court session, the young man stated that the reason for his assault was family disputes, where his sister said words that provoked him about not doing his role as a brother, which angered him and led him to "calm her down in a warning manner," according to his statements.
He also claimed that the water was lukewarm and not boiling, and that his sister was the one who pushed the kettle causing the water to spill on her face, denying intentionally harming her, and explaining that he filmed the video "to prevent misunderstanding of the incident."
The young man was arrested after his location was identified, and he was injured while attempting to harm himself before being detained, and was taken to the hospital for treatment, while his father was also detained, and the girl was placed under the protection of the Directorate of Family and Social Services.
After listening to the evidence and testimonies, the court sentenced the young man to one year and nine months in prison for assaulting his sister using hot water and the kettle which was considered a "weapon," and additional six months and 22 days for threatening a woman.
The court acquitted the father of all charges, and the young man was also acquitted of the charge of mistreatment.
