Spain Refuses to Recognize US Intervention in Venezuela

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Saturday that his country will not recognize the United States' intervention in Venezuela, which violates international law, after American forces arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who has ruled Venezuela for a long time, in an operation that took place overnight.

Sanchez said in a post on "X": "Spain did not recognize Maduro's regime, but it will also not recognize an intervention that violates international law and pushes the region towards a horizon of uncertainty and hostility."

Sanchez also called on all parties to "consider the civilian population, respect the United Nations Charter, and promote a fair transitional process through dialogue."

US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the United States "will manage" Venezuela and exploit its vast oil reserves, after the arrest of its president Maduro during a swift military operation in Caracas.

Trump's announcement came hours after a raid carried out by American special forces to arrest Maduro and his wife, while airstrikes targeted several locations in the Venezuelan capital, where a state of shock prevailed.
