Khaberni - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov demanded the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his reinstatement as head of state, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
This occurred during a call Lavrov had with his Belarusian counterpart Maxim Rigenkov, during which the ministers emphasized the necessity of "the immediate release of the legitimate Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, and their return to Caracas, with Maduro being immediately reinstated as head of state."
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated in an official release after the call that both ministers "emphasized the urgent need to stop the blatant violation of Venezuelan sovereignty, and work towards restoring the constitutional situation in the country to its normal course."
The statement confirmed that Moscow and Minsk firmly reject the military aggression launched by the United States against the Republic of Venezuela, considering it "a hostile act that violates the basic principles of international law and the United Nations Charter."
The statement mentioned that the ministers "exchanged views on the serious escalation of the situation in Venezuela, and affirmed that Russia and Belarus stand united in their firm condemnation of this illegitimate aggression against a sovereign state."
The two sides also emphasized the "importance of taking urgent steps to create conditions that allow resolving the current crisis through comprehensive national dialogue, in accordance with the principles of international law and respect for the free will of the Venezuelan people."
The Russian Foreign Ministry considered any attempt to impose a new political reality from outside, under false pretenses, as a direct threat to stability in Latin America and the world at large, calling on the international community to adopt a unified stance against unilateral dominance.
