Khaberni - A residential apartment in the Chinese city of Hong Kong witnessed a terrifying fire that led to the injury of four people and the death of a pet, after a mobile phone charger caused an electrical short circuit inside the unit.
The police received a report around 11:15 PM about a fire in an apartment located in the Fui Yiu House building in the Lai Yiu residential complex in the Kwai Chung area, leading the fire brigade to the site where they managed to control the blaze in a short time, preventing it from spreading to adjacent apartments.
The incident resulted in injuries to two men and two women, aged between 42 and 75 years, who were transported to Princess Margaret Hospital to receive the necessary medical care, after three of them suffered from complications due to smoke inhalation, while a 69-year-old woman suffered burns on her leg inside the affected apartment.
The fire also led to the death of a cat belonging to the apartment owner, who attempted to control the flames immediately after they started, when the phone ignited during charging, before she was forced to leave the place and seek help.
The initial investigations conducted by the Fire Services Department indicated that the cause of the fire was an electrical short in the mobile phone charger, with no criminal suspicion or any signs indicating deliberate action.
The incident temporarily evacuated about 150 residents of the building as a precautionary measure, before allowing them to gradually return after ensuring the site's safety and the absence of additional hazards.
