There are several reasons why dates are an excellent snack before a workout, according to Leah Barron, a nutritionist at "The Baseline Lifestyle": "Dates are a rich source of carbohydrates, with each piece containing between 10 to 18 grams of carbohydrates."

She adds: "It depends on the individual and the type of workout, but typically consuming 30 to 60 grams of carbohydrates about 1 to 3 hours before the workout is a good start."

According to "Free Will Health," consuming dates helps raise blood sugar levels, which aids the muscles in accessing glucose for fuel.

And the rise in blood sugar levels - caused by dates or other carbohydrates - is not a bad thing.

Barron explains, "With dates, the rise in blood sugar levels may be slightly lower due to their fiber content, which helps slow down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates."

Potassium

Dates are also notable for their content of potassium and magnesium, which play vital roles in muscle contraction and flexibility during exercise.

Additionally, dates contain copper, iron, and a degree of protein, which can be enhanced by consuming some peanuts, making the date meal a good source of nutrients needed by the body to rebuild muscle cells.
