4 Things to Keep in Mind to Maintain Urinary Tract Health

Khaberni - Understanding the mechanism of how the urinary and reproductive systems work can be somewhat obscure, but there is one certain thing: when these organs do not function as they should, it can be painful, uncomfortable, and extremely bothersome.

Taking steps to maintain the health of the urinary and reproductive organs is beneficial, especially as we age. Here are 4 things you should completely avoid to maintain urinary tract health:

1- Dehydration
Drinking water helps regulate body temperature, think clearly, and keep joints functioning smoothly, and getting enough water prevents the formation of kidney stones, which form when minerals and salts in the kidneys do not dissolve properly.

When stones move from the kidney to the ureter (the tube connecting the kidneys to the bladder), they either exit the body with urine or settle in the ureter, and both are very painful.

Approximately one in ten people experience kidney stones at some stage in their life, so drinking at least 12 cups (or about 3 liters) of water daily can prevent stone formation. It is also advised to minimize salt intake as much as possible and to add citrus (lemon or lime or orange) to drinking water, as citric acid helps prevent stone formation.

Drinking extra water daily protects women from bladder infections; drinking an additional 1.5 liters daily makes women less susceptible to bladder infections, one of the most common diseases among women, according to a recent American study. 19.11.2018

2- Holding urine
This happens to everyone, especially when the urge to urinate comes suddenly and there is no restroom nearby.

Although holding urine occasionally is not a real issue, if it becomes a habit it may increase the risk of infection, especially for pregnant women or men who have an enlarged prostate or a kidney disorder.

Moreover, people who frequently hold urine may lose bladder function later in life.

3- Constipation
Constipation is always an annoying feeling, but continued constipation for an extended period can also cause the following:

Inability to completely empty the bladder.
Increased risk of urinary tract infection.
Overactive bladder.
Difficulty urinating.

To avoid or alleviate constipation, it is recommended to engage in regular physical activity and consume more fruits and vegetables and fiber supplements.

The goal is to have a bowel movement once a day, and for it to be easy. You can add a dietary fiber supplement to water daily, adjusting the amount as needed to achieve this goal.

4- Do not ignore the presence of blood in the urine
There are several reasons, besides menstruation, that may lead to the appearance of blood in the urine, known also as hematuria.

While some of these causes can be easily treated, others may require more serious and immediate actions.

The presence of blood in the urine is the first sign of bladder cancer, so never ignore it, and make sure to visit a urologist to ensure your safety.

The color of the blood in the urine might change to pink or brown, and you must seek medical care even if you notice blood only once as it could be an indication of:

Prostate enlargement.
Kidney stones.
Urinary tract infection.
