Khaberni - Zehran Memdani has become the mayor of New York City, USA, after taking the constitutional oath at a historic subway station in Manhattan.
Memdani, a Democrat, took the oath as the first Muslim mayor of the largest city in the United States, placing his hand on a copy of the Quran during the ceremony.
The inauguration ceremony, managed by New York State Attorney General Letitia James, a political ally of his, took place at the old City Hall station, one of the first subway stations in the city, known for its stunning arched ceilings.
Memdani is scheduled to take the oath again in a more formal and grand public ceremony at one o'clock in the afternoon at New York City Hall, officiated by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, one of his political icons.
This will be followed by a public event organized by the new administration along Broadway, known as "Heroes' Valley", famous for its celebration parades and throwing of paper scraps.
By assuming office, Memdani begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, becoming one of the most followed politicians in the country.
In addition to being the first Muslim mayor of New York, Memdani is also the first mayor of South Asian descent, and the first mayor born in Africa. Also, at the age of thirty-four, he is the youngest mayor of the city in generations.
