Khaberni - Newly captured satellite images show the emergence and expansion of two displacement camps in the states of North Darfur and Northern State in Sudan amid the escalating intensity of the war in the country and the control of the Rapid Support Forces over the city of Al Fasher.
The Digital Investigations Unit of Al Jazeera "Sanad" analyzed large areas transforming into congested shelters for displaced people, with satellite image analysis revealing the establishment of a new displacement camp in the town of "Gurni" northwest of Al Fasher city after the city fell into the hands of the Rapid Support Forces on October 26th.
The images captured between October 25th and December 29th show a camp progressively doubling in size, where high-quality images taken on December 14th showed that the camp area was 186,000 square meters, but it increased by 13,000 square meters in just two weeks to become 199,000 square meters.
700 kilometers north of Al Fasher, other satellite images show significant expansion in the "Al Afad" camp east of the city of Al Dabba in the Northern State.
The images indicate a clear increase in the number of tents and the occupied area, with displaced people starting to flow to the camp since early November.
The captured images show that the camp, which was estimated to be about 130,000 square meters on November 19th, has jumped to over 500,000 square meters by December 29th.
The United Nations estimates indicate that nearly 100,000 people have fled Al Fasher since the end of October after the Rapid Support Forces took control of the city.
It is worth mentioning that the war in Sudan erupted in April 2023, causing tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of nearly 13 million people, amid worsening humanitarian suffering.
Out of the country's 18 states, the Rapid Support Forces control the five western Darfur states, except parts of North Darfur that are still under the control of the army, which imposes its influence on most of the remaining 13 states including the capital, Khartoum.
