Khaberni - A tragic incident occurred at a resort in Sao Pedro, Sao Paulo state in Brazil, where a simple recreational activity turned into a human disaster, with one contestant dying in a «Face in Watermelon» contest after choking on a piece of watermelon during his participation in the contest, which was part of the daily entertainment program for the guests.
According to Brazilian media, Carlos Cerasoma (37 years old) died after competing against five other guests to eat a large piece of watermelon as quickly as possible from a low table, using only their mouths without their hands, and the prize was very modest; just a portion of French fries.
His wife, Kimberly Santos, who was present at the scene, said that Carlos started the competition enthusiastically, but soon stopped moving and his head bent forward. The entertainment staff noticed that the last piece of watermelon had fallen onto the table, but discovered that Carlos was no longer responsive.
The resort staff attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation and then transported him alive to the emergency unit in the neighboring city, but he later passed away.
The forensic report confirmed that the cause of death was mechanical asphyxiation due to blockage of the airway by a piece of watermelon. The incident was recorded as a «suspicious death» at the Sao Pedro police station, and the body was buried in his hometown of Araras.
His wife Kimberly accused the resort management of negligence and unpreparedness in handling emergencies, pointing out that the very low table was not suitable for his height of approximately 1.8 meters, which contributed to a bad position that exacerbated the choking, and she announced her intention to file a lawsuit against the resort to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
The resort issued an official statement expressing its deep sorrow, affirming that all emergency procedures were activated immediately, and providing support for the family, but described the incident as a «sudden illness» without explicitly mentioning the choking.
