Formation of a Committee to Study the Reasons for the Collapse of Part of the Wall of the Old City of AlKarak

Khaberni -  The Jordanian Engineers Association has formed a specialized technical committee that includes various engineering disciplines to study the technical causes behind the collapse of part of the wall of the old city of Al-Karak, coinciding with the recent rainfall..

The association confirmed that the formation of the committee comes within the framework of its national role as a neutral engineering expertise house, and aims to conduct a thorough scientific study of the incident, without rushing to issue premature judgments, with the final technical report determining the faults and causes of the collapse accurately and objectively.

According to the association, the committee will include civil and structural engineering, geotechnical and hydrological specializations, in addition to specialized expertise in the restoration and maintenance of buildings and archaeological sites, ensuring a comprehensive approach that considers structural, environmental, and human aspects related to the site.

The association clarified in a statement that the committee will study the incident from several angles, including the nature of the archaeological wall and its components, the changes that have occurred over time, its efficiency in handling water loads, in addition to evaluating the rainwater drainage systems, and any structural or developmental interventions implemented on the site in recent years.

The association emphasized that the purpose of forming the committee is not to assign blame or justify the incidents, but to analyze them with a professional scientific analysis that leads to deriving lessons, enhancing the safety of structures, and improving the governance of development and restoration projects, especially in archaeological sites of high historical value.

It confirmed that any conclusions or recommendations will be exclusively issued in the final technical report that will be prepared by the committee after completing the survey, field study, and technical analysis, in coordination with the related official entities, pointing out that judgment on the causes of the collapse cannot be made except based on the results of this report.

The association concluded by reaffirming its ongoing partnership with specialized national institutions, serving to protect cultural heritage, enhance public safety standards, and establish a scientific approach in dealing with structural incidents.
