Despite the common slogan that links daily apple consumption with good health, experts warn that some people may need to avoid these fruits among others due to disturbing health symptoms that include bloating, diarrhea, and other digestive disorders.
Dr. Donald Grant, a general practitioner and lead clinical consultant at "The Independent Pharmacy", confirmed that some individuals have difficulty metabolizing fructose, a type of natural sugar found in fruits, which can lead to increased gas and bloating, and sometimes diarrhea.
Grant also noted that some fruits may cause allergic reactions, which vary in severity from person to person, and may include apples among other types, according to the British newspaper Mirror.
Mouth Allergy Syndrome under scrutiny
The doctor explained that apples are among the most common causes of what is known as "mouth allergy syndrome", which results from similarities between fruit proteins and pollen proteins, triggering an immune response.
He added that fruits like pears, plums, and cherries may trigger similar symptoms, including swelling of the lips, mouth, and tongue, while strawberries, kiwi, and avocados are among the fruits that may cause severe allergies or rashes and nausea in some cases.
Tips for those who struggle with digesting fructose
For those who have difficulty digesting fructose, Grant advised avoiding fruits rich in this sugar, such as apples, pears, and mangoes, pointing out the importance of using hydration solutions such as "Dioralyte" during diarrhea to restore hydration. He also emphasized the necessity of consulting a doctor if any symptoms appear, as food intolerance or allergies can occur at any stage of life.
Fruit as part of a healthy diet
Despite the warnings, the National Health Service (NHS) asserts that fruits and vegetables are a fundamental part of a healthy and balanced diet, recommending the consumption of five servings a day from a variety, taking into account individual health conditions.
