How Blue Screens Affect the Skin

Khaberni - Dr. Natalia Mikhailova, a specialist in dermatology and reproductive health, stated that prolonged exposure to blue light emitted from smartphone, computer, and TV screens could accelerate skin aging.

The doctor points out that prolonged exposure to blue light emitted from smartphone and computer screens and TVs accelerates skin aging by causing oxidative stress and collagen breakdown.

The doctor said: "Blue light penetrates the skin layers deeper than ultraviolet rays, reaching the dermis, increasing the formation of free radicals. This results in oxidative stress and increased collagen breakdown, thus accelerating skin aging".

Mikhailova added that other factors play a negative role, such as poor microcirculation, facial muscle tension, especially around the eye area, and skin dryness. She pointed out that the heat from screens and constant hand contact with the face leads to the accumulation of impurities, where particles of sebum and fine dust gather on the skin, which may cause infections and increase skin sensitivity, thus leading to premature aging.

Given the impossibility of completely eliminating electronic devices, the doctor recommended taking measures to limit the damage. She said: "It is advisable to use screen protectors that reduce exposure to blue light, and to cleanse the skin thoroughly and regularly. Focus should also be on skincare products rich in antioxidants, such as creams and serums containing vitamins C and E, niacinamide, and plant extracts rich in bioflavonoids and green tea".

Mikhailova also emphasized the importance of using sunscreen even indoors, because it blocks part of the blue light. She explained that skin health also depends on lifestyle, so it is necessary to take breaks from screens, get sufficient sleep, and drink ample fluids to ensure proper skin hydration.
