Nasal Drops Addiction How Does Frequent Use Affect Normal Breathing

Khaberni - Dr. Vladimir Zaitsev, an ear, nose, and throat specialist, indicates that nasal drops which work on constricting blood vessels can disrupt the natural function of these vessels.

Normally, the body regulates the contraction of the nasal blood vessels through the natural secretion of adrenaline produced by the adrenal glands that reaches the nasal turbinates. However, with frequent use of drops containing xylometazoline or oxymetazoline, the body gradually stops this function and relies on the substance found in the drops.

The doctor adds: "These drops indeed cause addiction, as they replace the natural secretion of adrenaline in the lower nasal turbinates. Over time, a person enters a vicious cycle of dependence on the drops."

Zaitsev advises using these medications only when absolutely necessary, and for a short period not exceeding a few days, even with severe nasal congestion, to give the body a chance to restore its natural regulation of the blood vessels.

In case of addiction, it is necessary to gradually stop the use of the drops by reducing the frequency of use, and if this method does not succeed, it is preferable to consult a specialist. Treatment methods include restoring the activity of the mucous membrane through physical therapy, irrigation with suction, or radiofrequency coagulation, which helps restore normal nasal breathing.
