China Imposes First Global Mandatory Energy Consumption Limit for Electric Vehicles Starting 2026

Khaberni - The Chinese authorities announced the adoption of the first globally mandatory standard that sets the maximum energy consumption for electric vehicles, which will officially begin to be applied on January 1, 2026, as a step aimed at increasing vehicle efficiency, reducing electricity consumption, and improving operational range.

According to the new system, the maximum consumption will be determined according to the weight and category of the vehicle. For example, electric vehicles weighing close to two tonnes are not allowed to exceed 15.1 kilowatts per hour per 100 kilometers, with varying values depending on the size and weight of each vehicle.

The regulatory bodies confirmed that the purpose of the standard is to stimulate companies to develop more efficient technologies in engines and batteries, which contributes to increasing driving range, reducing the pressure on power grids, and decreasing indirect emissions associated with electricity generation.

It is expected that the decision will directly affect the design of electric vehicles over the coming years, especially larger and heavier models, as compliance with the standard will be a condition for obtaining incentives and government support within the Chinese market, which is the largest globally in terms of electric vehicle sales.
