Khaberni - The Israeli police announced the appointment of Yasser Haddaya Asadi as a commander of a battalion in the Border Guard, thus becoming the first Arab and Muslim to lead a battalion in this security branch.
"Yedioth Ahronoth" website stated that Asadi, 52 years old, is the only Arab Muslim among 107 graduates, and was appointed as the commander of the "Adumim" battalion, operating around Jerusalem, according to the "Jerusalem Post" newspaper.
According to the newspaper, Asadi has worked extensively in the West Bank and along the seam line in the Jerusalem area.
The newspaper quoted him saying that his main task will focus on preventing illegal infiltration, ensuring the security of the residents in Jerusalem and the West Bank. Asadi said about his appointment, "It is a realization of a personal dream and a pivotal moment," considering that reaching this position sends a message to the Arab youth in Israel that opportunities are available for those who choose to contribute to the society. He added that breaking the "glass ceiling" is possible with belief in personal abilities and continuous work.
He mentioned that his brother, Sergeant First Class Hassan Haddaya Asadi, who was killed during his service in the Border Guard in 1983, was a major inspiration for his career. He also mentioned that two of his three sons serve in the Israeli Prison Service.
