Syrian Fatwa Regarding Replacing Old Currency

Khaberni  - The Supreme Fatwa Council in Syria issued a Sharia statement regarding the currency replacement process, emphasizing that exploiting the replacement to harm people through raising prices or infringing on their rights is religiously forbidden.

The council clarified that exploiting this measure to harm people is religiously forbidden due to its injustice and consuming people's money unjustly.

The Supreme Fatwa Council confirmed that removing zeros from the currency is an administrative regulatory measure that does not affect financial rights or existing obligations.

The council stated in the declaration that after reviewing and clarifying the Syrian pound replacement process, based on public interest and monetary regulation, which facilitates and stabilizes financial transactions, removing zeros from the national currency is purely an administrative regulatory measure that does not change the value of obligations or affect existing financial rights.

The council reported that debts, contracts, dowries, and other financial obligations remain preserved and considered religiously valid, and are numerically converted to the new currency at the equivalent value without increase or decrease.

It indicated that what was an obligation of 100,000 pounds becomes 1,000 pounds with the same value, and so are other transactions.

It mentioned that the currency exchange takes place by handing over the old currency and receiving the equivalent value in the new currency immediately, hands-on hands without delay.

As for bank accounts, it suffices for the balance to appear in the equivalent value in the new currency between the parties, according to the same source.

In its statement conclusion, the council highlighted that the stability of financial transactions is a religious consideration of importance, and cooperation on this is religiously obligatory as it enhances trust, preserves rights, and realizes public interest.
