President Donald Trump said that the United States is closer than ever to reaching an agreement to end the war in Ukraine «more than ever before», confirming that this could be achieved within weeks if things go well.
Trump added in remarks following his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida, Sunday (U.S. time), that Washington wants to work with Europeans on security guarantees for Ukraine, noting that Europe will take the bulk of these guarantees.
He pointed out that both the Ukrainian and Russian Presidents want to end the war, with a possibility of a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy «in due time».
Trump clarified that negotiations still face a couple of thorny issues, primarily the land issue, noting that Russia demands Ukraine to give up the Donbass region, considering that Moscow should adjust this demand. He also revealed approaching an agreement on the Donbass region and discussing the situation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and the possibility of its quick reopening.
The American president mentioned the formation of an American task force including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, and other officials, confirming that Russia will contribute to the reconstruction of Ukraine after reaching an agreement.
For his part, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the technical teams would meet to finalize the details, confirming Ukraine’s readiness for peace, and that the security guarantees were a central discussion point with Trump for achieving lasting peace.
