Saeedat reveals diesel fraud methods

Nuhar Saeedat, the Syndicate of Fuel Station Owners, Warehouses, and Gas Agencies, advised consumers on Sunday to only purchase diesel (solar) from licensed bodies, urging them not to be misled by fake advertisements that offer promos such as "coupons" or "boiler inspections" in exchange for filling up.

He added: "I advise checking the identity and number of the tanker and its permit, and verifying the amounts by measuring them," according to Al Mamlakah.

Regarding the measurement method, Saeedat said: "For example, if the tank's measurement is 2×1 meters, each centimeter in the tank equals 20 liters, and if it is 1×1 meter, each centimeter equals 10 liters (...) measurement should be done after discharge and the quantity should match the permit."

Saeedat urged consumers who buy large quantities of diesel to install a reception meter to ensure the agreed amount is filled.

He pointed out that some cases of fraud in filling diesel occur by pumping air during the fill-up.

He noted that cheating is not only limited to the quantity but sometimes involves mixing kerosene with diesel, since kerosene is less expensive.

He explained: "Kerosene is cheaper than diesel by about 200 dinars per thousand liters, so the official entities became alert and allocated a color for kerosene to distinguish it from diesel."

Saeedat called for dealing with licensed entities, or going directly to fuel stations and requesting diesel from them, and not paying attention to advertisements talking about maintenance and gifts.

He said: "The profit per thousand liters is 23 dinars, so do not be misled by fake advertisements."

Saeedat also warned residents of apartment buildings against some building guards who shut off the private valve to the apartment tanks, telling residents that the diesel has run out, prompting them to buy despite having sufficient quantities. He urged for a private valve for each apartment under the supervision of the apartment owner, not the guard.

The Jordanian Standards and Metrology Organization warned citizens and business owners against purchasing diesel (solar) through fake electronic pages or being misled by offers promoted by pages impersonating companies operating in the fuel sector, claiming to deliver diesel to the facilities.

The organization affirmed, in a post on social media platforms, the importance of avoiding purchases from unknown electronic sources or unlicensed ones, calling for checking the tanker permit issued by the Jordanian Standards and Metrology Organization, and ensuring it is valid.

The organization emphasized the importance of ensuring the presence of official seals on the tanker meter, and that the hose is filled with diesel, and that the meter starts at zero before beginning the filling process, in addition to the necessity of obtaining a printed invoice that clarifies the amount of fuel that was filled, and verifying that the amount on the invoice matches the meter reading.

It also called on the public to keep the tanker number and the name of the station or company it belongs to, which facilitates follow-up and prosecution procedures in case of any observations or violations.

The Jordanian Standards and Metrology Organization also confirmed that it receives complaints and inquiries related to fuel quantities or quality via phone and WhatsApp (065301243), through the official website (www.jsmo.gov.jo), or through the "At Your Service" application, stressing the importance of immediate reporting in case of any suspected violations, to protect consumer rights and safety.
