A single ticket won the Powerball grand prize of $1.817 billion on Christmas Eve, making it the second-largest lottery prize in U.S. history. The winner, whose identity has yet to be disclosed, bought the winning ticket from a gas station outside Little Rock, Arkansas.
According to CBS affiliate KTHV in Little Rock, Arkansas law allows lottery prize winners over $500,000 to keep their identity secret.
The last hit of the Powerball grand prize was on September 6 in Missouri and Texas, when two winners split a prize of $1.787 billion.
Powerball explained that this is only the second time in the game's history that two consecutive prizes have surpassed one billion dollars.
The $1.817 billion prize ranks second after the $2.04 billion prize won by a single person in 2022 in Altadena, California, which was the largest in Powerball and lottery history in general.
