Abbas I reject any steps that could undermine Somali sovereignty

Khaberni - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his rejection of Israel's recognition of Somali territory.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry, on Friday, expressed Palestine's absolute support for the unity, sovereignty, and political independence of Somalia, "ensuring the brotherly Somali people's right to live in dignity and security and stability, in accordance with international law and the decisions of the Arab and international consensus, and the decisions of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation."

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry rejected "Israel's recognition of the Somali Land region (Somali territory), and any steps that support separation or lend legality to it, or undermine the sovereignty and unity of Somalia, and undermine its stability."

It mentioned that "this rejected recognition is considered part of Israel’s attempts, as a colonial power, to undermine international peace and security, particularly regional and Arab security, and incidents persist in threatening the region and keeping it in a state of instability."

It also pointed out that "Israel had used the name Somali Land as a destination for the deportation of our Palestinian people, especially from the Gaza Strip."

The Somali government, in a statement by the Office of the Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barri, on Friday evening, expressed its "utter" rejection of Israel’s declaration of its recognition of the independence of the region known as "Somali Land", the separatist north of the country.

The statement confirmed that "the region of Somali Land is an integral part of the sovereign Federal Republic of Somalia, and it cannot be separated or dealt with separately."

The statement emphasized that Somalia is "one country", and that the Israeli recognition is "null and void."

The region of "Somali Land”, which does not enjoy official recognition since it declared separation from Somalia in 1991, continues to act as an independent administrative, political, and security entity, with the central government’s inability to extend its control over the region, or its leadership's ability to secure independence.
