Khaberni - The taxi and service stops in Beheira province experienced a state of chaos between supporters and opponents of a decision issued by the director of the stops, which forbids any girl or woman from sitting next to the driver in taxis, service cars, and buses for both public and tourist transport without referring to the governor.
The director of stops explained that the decision was in response to a number of complaints about violations, public manners, and passenger safety. He affirmed that the aim is to enforce discipline within the transportation services and provide a safe and respectful environment for all, with a strict enforcement of the decision across all lines. He warned of legal actions against any violation, including imposing fines or halting the vehicle's operation in accordance with regulations and laws.
However, the decision angered the governor for being issued independently and without her consultation, prompting her to intervene after 7 hours and issue a statement this morning, in which she announced the cancellation of the decision.
The governorate confirmed its commitment to women's rights and their role enhancement in society, emphasizing that the primary goal is to provide a safe and suitable environment for everyone, adhering to public morals and the constitutional rights of all citizens.
After the announcement of the cancellation, «Al-Dustour» spoke to several station drivers, where some confirmed that they had implemented the decision for a short period before they knew about its cancellation, while others refused to apply it, demanding an official written directive.
They added that they were surprised to see stickers placed on vehicles, prohibiting women from sitting in the front seats. However, these were promptly removed following the governor's statement, which restored order and calm to the stops.
