Ben Gvir urges Israelis to arm themselves

Khaberni - Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir urged Israelis to arm themselves, stating, "I call on the citizens of Israel to arm themselves," and emphasized that "the attack proved that weapons save lives," following the Beisan operation.

Yesterday, Friday, two Israelis were killed, and six others were injured in a ramming and stabbing incident in the Beisan area in northern Israel, in an incident which the Israeli police said was carried out by a resident of the West Bank.

The Israeli ambulance service reported that the dual operation in Beisan occurred at three locations, where a woman was fatally stabbed and another person was killed by ramming, with six others injured.

Al Jazeera's correspondent explained that the perpetrator, a young Palestinian, rammed an Israeli with his car, then exited his vehicle and stabbed a woman, noting that he was shot by the Israeli police, who managed to arrest him.

Ben Gvir - in statements relayed by the Israeli "i24 News" website from the site of the attack - confirmed that the perpetrator was "neutralized" by an armed civilian, which he considered a crucial factor in preventing an increase in the death toll.

Itamar Ben Gvir encouraged Israelis to take advantage of recent easements in firearms licensing requirements and join civilian emergency response units designed to enhance immediate response to hostile attacks.

Ben Gvir reiterated his stance on the death penalty, stating, "The measure that will save more lives is the enactment of a law allowing the death penalty for terrorists convicted of committing deadly attacks."

He emphasized that "those who commit these attacks do not seek death but to survive and serve their prison sentences," which justifies, in his opinion, "the need for complete deterrence."

The Israeli Army Radio quoted a security source saying that the Beisan operation's perpetrator infiltrated from the area of the security barrier near Jerusalem and had been banned from entering Israel, having been imprisoned 10 years ago for participating in confrontations with army forces.

International humanitarian law explicitly prohibits collective punishment measures against civilian populations for crimes they did not commit, including Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which bans collective penalties and considers them war crimes.

Since January 21, 2025, the Israeli military has been conducting a wide-ranging military operation in the northern West Bank, starting in the Jenin camp and then expanding to the Nur Shams and Tulkarm camps.

Since then, the Israeli military has imposed a strict siege on the three camps, continuing to destroy infrastructure, homes, and shops of citizens, leading to the displacement of about 50,000 Palestinians, according to official data.
