Described as Hope A New Step to Stop the War in Sudan

The Arab League described the peace initiative presented by the Sudanese government to the Security Council as reflecting a deep awareness of the severity of the crisis in Sudan and a clear intention to stop the war in the country.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expressed his great welcome for the speech delivered by the Prime Minister of the Sudanese transitional government to the International Security Council, which included a comprehensive peace initiative.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League affirmed that the Sudanese initiative reflects a deep awareness of the severity of the crisis in Sudan and a clear determination to stop the war and save lives, alleviate the human suffering endured by the Sudanese people, preserve the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Sudan.

The spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Counselor Jamal Rashidi, stated that the Arab League appreciates the political, humanitarian, and security messages contained in the initiative, seeing it as a serious framework that can be built upon and thus merits a positive engagement.

The Arab League considered the Sudanese initiative as an essential part of any comprehensive solution process and efforts aimed at ending armed conflict and restoring security and stability in Sudan, thereby preventing any threat to its national unity or the disintegration of its social fabric.

The spokesperson added that the Arab League supports the call of the initiative for a comprehensive ceasefire, protection of civilians, guaranteeing the flow of humanitarian aid, addressing the conditions of displaced persons and refugees, disarmament, and the implementation of disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration programs, setting the stage for rebuilding trust and repairing the social fabric, and reinforcing the foundations of a unified Sudanese state.

He clarified that the Arab League emphasizes the importance of interacting with the proposals contained in the initiative for confidence-building measures, political, security, economic, and social, which are based on the principles of transitional justice, reparation, national reconciliation, and inclusiveness, enhancing the chances for lasting peace, preserving the unity of the community and the state, and preventing the recurrence of violence or sliding towards pathways of division or disintegration.

He expressed the Arab League's welcome for the initiative's emphasis on national ownership of the political process, and on initiating a comprehensive Sudanese dialogue during the transitional period, leading to a national consensus on state management and governance, within the one, unified Sudan, culminating in free and fair elections with international observation as it fulfills the aspirations of the Sudanese people for democratic transition and stability.

The official spokesperson spoke of the coordination and cooperation of the Arab League with the United Nations, the African Union, regional and international partners in supporting and accompanying efforts aimed at peace, motivated by its national responsibility and its steadfast commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Sudan, and the preservation of its security and stability, serving regional and international peace.
