The British police launched an unprecedented step to attract more Muslim women, after developing an innovative magnetic hijab known as the «Blue Light Hijab» Blue Light Hijab, specifically designed to prevent choking or pulling during field confrontations, while maintaining the dignity of policewomen.
The hijab relies on a magnetic clip that automatically detaches when pulled, without revealing hair, which ensures the protection of the policewoman in the field while fully maintaining her religious appearance. Leicester police have already started distributing it, while other forces have expressed interest in implementing it later, and even emergency services like paramedics may adopt the version soon.
The leader of the initiative, Sergeant Yasmin Desai, said that the idea of a safe hijab was proposed 20 years ago, but its development took years of research and experimentation, confirming that the new design is safe, practical, and protects the dignity of Muslim women.
This initiative comes as the British police seek to enhance diversity, as Muslims only make up 2.5% of police elements despite representing 6% of the UK population. It also highlights the challenges faced by Muslim policewomen, including physical and verbal assaults and hijab pulling while on duty.
The project not only enhances safety but also sends a strong message that the police can be a safe and open place for all women, regardless of religion or culture. Officials hope this innovation will encourage more women to join their ranks.
