The United Nations Security Council convened today, Tuesday, for a session on the Iranian nuclear file, where members were briefed by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo.
DiCarlo emphasized that reaching a negotiated settlement that ensures a peaceful Iranian nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions is the best available option for the international community, adding, "Despite significant differences among the parties concerned about how to move forward in regard to Security Council Resolution 2231 of 2015 and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, they continued to emphasize the importance of a diplomatic solution and expressed their general willingness to communicate with each other for this purpose."
The UN official noted that according to the so-called "snapback mechanism", and since the Council did not adopt a resolution to continue the termination of sanctions within 30 days from the letter presented by Germany, France, and the United Kingdom regarding the commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the previous sanctions on Iran were reinstated on September 27, 2025, noting that several concerned member states rejected the validity and effectiveness of the re-imposition process, while some members specifically stated that the process was procedurally and legally flawed.
