Dr. Tatiana Golovatchanskaya reported that the recurrence of heartburn in teenagers might not only suggest random dietary errors, but also serious health issues that necessitate medical care.
According to the doctor, occasional episodes of heartburn after eating pizza, drinking soda, or having a late dinner are understandable, but the regular occurrence of this symptom, which interferes with studying, sleeping, or eating, calls for a medical examination.
She points out that heartburn may be associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease, and with increased esophageal sensitivity linked to anxiety or depression, which are common during adolescence.
She says: "In this case, the symptom becomes part of the overall stress in the body. Other serious causes include eosinophilic esophagitis, a condition in which certain cells that are not normally found in the esophageal mucosa accumulate. If left untreated, this inflammation may lead to narrowing of the esophagus, food impaction, and other complications, so if you feel a lump, difficulty swallowing, or food impaction, it is essential to consult a doctor immediately."
In addition, heartburn can be a result of chronic constipation, which weakens the movement of the upper part of the digestive system and increases the likelihood of refluxing stomach contents. Heartburn may also arise as a side effect of certain medications prescribed to teenagers for other reasons.
The doctor confirms that regular heartburn should not be considered age-related. However, if symptoms persist, she recommends not just adjusting the diet, but consulting a specialist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
