Discovering the Relationship Between Sleep Deprivation and Elevated Blood Sugar

A recent scientific study has shown that elevated blood sugar levels, especially those resulting from excessive consumption of added sugars, are directly connected to poor sleep quality and increased insomnia, explaining why many struggle to enter deep sleep stages despite spending adequate hours in bed.

According to the study published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, a research team analyzed the relationship between sugar consumption and sleep quality, finding that sharp fluctuations in blood sugar levels affect the body's biological rhythm and disrupt the deep sleep stages necessary for mental and physical rejuvenation.

The researchers clarified that sugar intake leads to a rapid increase in glucose, followed by a sudden drop, which reflects on the central nervous system and stimulates the secretion of hormones associated with alertness and stress, such as cortisol, at times when the body should be preparing for sleep.

The study indicated that individuals who consume high amounts of sugars, especially in the evening, experience difficulty falling asleep, interrupted sleep, and a clear reduction in deep sleep duration, compared to those who follow a balanced diet low in sugar.

The results also pointed out that sleep disruption resulting from abnormal glucose levels is not limited to diabetes patients only but also appears in healthy individuals, making sugar regulation in the diet a key factor for improving sleep quality in the long term.

The study confirmed that improving sleep depends not only on reducing screen time or adjusting bedtime but also requires reconsidering dietary habits, especially reducing added sugars hours before sleep.
