Khaberni - An Iraqi-Turkish wedding held in Şanlıurfa, southeastern Turkey, sparked a wide wave of debate and interaction on social media, after scenes were shared showing the bride sitting during the ceremony, due to the heavy weight of the gold she was wearing, alongside other scenes of money piled up by guests over the couple's heads.
According to Turkish media, the groom belongs to the "Izol" tribe, one of the oldest tribes in Şanlıurfa, and he is Kehraman Zülfikar Izol (26 years old), a lawyer and nephew of the former deputy from the ruling Justice and Development Party, Zülfikar Izol.
The bride is Nazdar Barzani (25 years old), also a lawyer, and daughter of Abdul Karim Barzani, and belongs to the family of Masoud Barzani, president of the Iraqi Kurdistan Democratic Party.
During the ceremony, unusual scenes took place as attendees raced to scatter large amounts of money over the heads of the bride and groom, forcing the organizers to collect the cash in huge boxes. The bride received kilograms of gold as gifts, including various gold coins, a gold belt, heavy necklaces, a diamond ring, and a gold crown.
Due to this great weight, the bride was forced to sit after a short period of dancing, in a scene captured by video clips that spread widely on social media platforms, sparking interactions ranging from praise for the wedding's lavishness to criticism of the exaggeration in showcasing wealth.
The wedding, which was held amid a huge public attendance, also took on a noticeable political and tribal character, as it was overseen by the mayor of Siverek, Ali Murad Bojak, and was attended by tribal leaders and local dignitaries along with hundreds of guests.
From his side, Zülfikar Izol said that this marriage represents a bridge to enhance the bonds of brotherhood and social relations between Turkey and Iraq, referring to the political and social symbolism that the event carried.
