Predictions of Unusual Rain and Cold Waves in Egypt during Winter

Dr. Manar Ghanem, a member of the media center at the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, announced that forecasts for winter 2025–2026 in Egypt indicate rainfall and temperature rates around or above natural averages, especially in the northern provinces, with expected declines in temperatures and frost waves, alongside relative stability during the first week of winter, which will see moderate daytime and cold nighttime weather.

Ghanem added, during a phone intervention on the program «Morning Egypt» on the satellite channel «MBC Egypt 2», that the winter of 2025–2026 will witness rainfall and temperature levels mostly around or above the natural averages, particularly concerning rainfall amounts.

The media center member further explained that this winter will experience higher than usual rainfall rates, especially in the northern provinces, noting: «We will observe higher rainfall rates than we are accustomed to during the winter season each year».

She confirmed that the peak of rainfall during this winter would occur in January and February, leading to decreases in temperatures, along with passing through waves of frost and extreme cold on some days, indicating that the winter season does not experience a continuous decrease in temperatures, as some days will be around or above the averages, while others will be below them.

She continued: «We will definitely witness more drops in temperatures than what we have seen in recent days, as many wonder about the reason for the start of winter with moderate temperatures, but what we experienced was within the natural averages for December, which is usually a month that sees a drop in temperatures».

She pointed out that the Siberian high is one of the most significant pressure systems that affect the region during the winter season, as it brings extremely cold air from Eastern Europe, causing noticeable drops in temperatures; however, the first week of winter witnesses a state of relative stability, where the weather conditions are stable, and temperatures are mostly around the natural averages for this time of the year, with daytime highs in Greater Cairo ranging between 21 and 22 degrees Celsius, with stable weather conditions in most provinces.
