World Food Programme Available Funding for Refugees Sufficient Only Until March 2026 in Jordan

A report for the World Food Programme in Jordan has shown that the currently available financial resources are only sufficient to cover the food and cash assistance allocated to refugees in Jordan until the end of March 2026.

The report indicates that the World Food Programme is currently seeking to secure $51 million to enable its operations to continue until the end of 2026.

The programme also needs an additional $8 million to ensure the continuation of the school meals program in Jordan, or "otherwise, the daily healthy meals provided to nearly 500,000 Jordanian and refugee children in schools both inside and outside the camps will cease," according to the report.

The report reveals about 172,000 Syrian refugees have returned to Syria from Jordan between December 2024 and November 2025. Despite this, the report notes that Jordan remains the second highest country in terms of the number of refugees relative to its population size.

In November 2025, the programme provided reduced food and cash assistance to about 230,000 refugees inside the camps and in communities, where each individual receives 15 Jordanian dinars ($21) monthly. However, the assistance does not include one-third of the refugees who suffer from food insecurity.

Food security monitoring results for the third quarter of 2025 indicate that half of the refugees in the camps and 81% in the communities suffer from food insecurity. Despite some Syrians returning, half of those residing in the camps and three-quarters of those in communities plan to stay in Jordan for at least an additional year, according to the report.

The report indicates that refugee families suffer from reduced job opportunities and rising debts, which has led to decreased spending on food compared to previous years.

The World Food Programme assists an estimated 720,000 people monthly through cash transfers and school nutrition programs, and continues to provide unconditional cash transfers to refugees and the poorest Jordanian families, but a decrease in funding has led to a reduction in aid amounts and many needy families being deprived.

School Nutrition

In cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the programme distributes healthy meals and dates school meals to more than 500,000 students, including 115,000 in the camps.

This program is one of the key pillars in combating malnutrition and encouraging students to continue their studies.

The World Food Programme believes that any funding shortfall will expose children to the risk of losing a major source of nutrition.
